The Legacy of Pedro Linares / El legado de Pedro Linares

English: Today, we celebrate the birthday of the renown figure Pedro Linares, remembering him with solemn nostalgia for his contribution to art and history. He was a man celebrated even on the Google landing page banner, reserved for the most outstanding historical figures, decorated with his colorful doodle styles and alebrijes.

Pedro, along with his sons, worked as carton merchants selling piñatas, masks, and relics of Saint Judas without reprise for years. However, his fame is not so much attributed to that work as much as his legacy for being the most famous creator of carton alebrijes in Mexico City, his native home.

He was the son to a carton merchant and potter, who taught him at the early age of 8 years old what would eventually become the trade he would perfect.

Pedro Linares recounted that he traditionally had used potter molds for his carton creations, as well as the pottery skills passed down from his father.

Pedro worked upwards of 12 hours a day selling his creation on street corners using a matraca instrument to attract customers. He would later admit that he would only rest after Holy Week following the tradition of the Burning of Judas celebration.

One fateful evening, Pedro eventually fell ill for several days after years of exhaustion from work. Although his family tried to help him recover, his pride from having lived a humble lifestyle would not allow it, barring them from buying him medicines or treatment. Consequently, he spiraled into a nightmare he would never forget. In a trance, he met the alebrijes, strange and colorful creatures that sang, screamed, and bellowed “Alebrije, alebrije, alebrije!”.

Recovering from his sickness, he began to recreate the vision from his strange dream in the forms of the creatures that are popular today, but not without multiple failures in the process. Initially, his work for his alebrijes were not accepted. It was not until other public figures like Frida Khalo and Diego Rivera acknowledged his work did his he soar to new heights, obtaining additional fame in a Judith Bronowski documentary about his work.

By 1990, Pedro Linares was honored with the National Award for Science and Art for his arduous body of work in the category of Art and Popular Traditions. He passed away soon after in 1992 heralded as a national legacy, upheld by his family to date.

Said legacy has cultivated a grand lineage of artisans who continue to uphold the artful trade of carton merchants and alebrijes in Mexico City.

Lest we not forget, there exists also the alebrije of Oaxaca, whose story will be reserved in another entry of our blog!
